Some Software Tools for Web Design
Editing Text Files (HTML & CSS)
Text editors (such as Text Edit, Word Pad, Notepad, vi, emacs,
and pico) are a standard part of every operating system, but
the following offer more useful features than the standard
fare:
- Notepad++: A
robust and full-featured text editor for the PC. Includes
syntax hightlighting for HTML and other lanugages. (To turn
on tag "autoclosing" go to the TextFX menu
and select TextFX settings >> Autoclose XHTML/XML <tag>.)
- Text
Wrangler: A text editor for the Mac with syntax
highlighting and FTP capability.
Working with Servers
The following programs allow you to connect securely to the
web server.
- PuTTY: (putty.exe)
A handy telnet and secure shell (SSH) client for Windows.
I reccomend using this program in SSH mode for more security
than the Windows XP telnet client.
- WinSCP: A
drag-and-drop secure file transfer (SFTP) client for Windows.
Again, I reccomend using this program instead of the Windows
XP standard FTP client.
- If your browser of choice is Firefox, you can also use
fireftp.
